As Uganda prepares for the 2024 Christmas festivities, the Uganda Police Force (UPF) has issued comprehensive safety guidelines to ensure peaceful celebrations.

Speaking at a press conference at police headquarters in Naguru, Police Spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke emphasized the need for vigilance and collaboration between communities and law enforcement.

Key Highlights

General Safety

  • Neighborhood Watch: Citizens are urged to embrace the neighborhood watch initiative for enhanced security, focusing on vigilance, connectedness, and information sharing with police.
  • Crime Alerts: Families leaving homes unattended during outings are advised to liaise with neighbors and police to deter criminal activities such as burglaries.

Fireworks Displays

  • Permissions for fireworks must be sought from the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
  • Displays will be limited to five minutes, supervised by licensed personnel, and monitored by local police commanders.

Entertainment Events

  • Event organizers must seek clearance from the IGP and co-plan security with district authorities.
  • Safety measures include ensuring venues have emergency exits, assembly points, and do not exceed capacity.
  • Flammable materials are discouraged, and area commanders will issue additional guidelines as needed.

Traffic Management

  • Increased traffic enforcement will target reckless driving, speeding, and drink-driving, particularly for Public Service Vehicle drivers.
  • Motorcyclists are reminded to use helmets and adhere to safety regulations.
  • Boats must have life jackets and adhere to passenger limits to ensure waterway safety.

Fire Safety

The public is advised to prioritize fire safety at home and during events, particularly during fireworks displays.

Shopping and Financial Transactions

  • Increased shopping activity has heightened risks of theft and financial fraud. Police urge caution in cash transactions and online payments.

Crime and Terrorism Prevention

  • Police remain on high alert against general crimes such as theft and burglaries, particularly as homes may be left unattended during celebrations.
  • Security measures have been heightened to detect and avert potential terrorist threats.

Message to the Public

The Uganda Police Force calls on the public to cooperate with law enforcement to maintain safety during this festive season. Through vigilance, community collaboration, and adherence to guidelines, citizens can enjoy a peaceful and joyous holiday period.
